Synopsis:
Supervillains Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, Peacemaker and a collection of nutty cons at Belle Reve prison join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X as they are dropped off at the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.
Reaction:
Insane and frenetic. It's a rather unique experience and James Gunn does a great job making one of DC's stupidest villains a sympathetic and better-realized character.

Trivia:
As for how director `~10693~` got `~10405~` to voice the role of Nanaue/King Shark, it didn't take a whole lot of convincing. Gunn said to him, "I wrote this role for you in The Suicide Squad. It won't take too much of your time." Stallone replied, "Oh yeah?" To which Gunn said, "Yeah. It's a big, kinda chubby, human-eating shark." To which Stallone said, "Anything for you, brother." `~10693~` was allowed to use any character he wanted. Consequently, he specifically filled The Suicide Squad with obscure and unknown villains since he felt that was more faithful to the Squad in the comics: "I wanted to stick with `~19814~`'s original vision of mostly second-rate antagonists. There's an innate tragic element to supervillains who aren't even that good at being bad." `~16119~` wears a new costume that features Harley's traditional red and black color palette, with `~10693~` taking inspiration from the character's costume in the video game @#Batman: Arkham City#@. He wanted her jacket to have "motorcycle gang style"-writing on the back, and chose "Live fast, die clown" over other potential options "Clown AF" and "World's Best Grandpa". Gunn also removed Harley's "Rotten" facial tattoo from previous DC films because both he and Robbie disliked it. DC Comics fans couldn't help but notice that King Shark differs from his New 52 comic book origins, for which he's typically a hammerhead shark. So as he often does, director `~10693~` took the time to walk curious fans through his design process for the character. According to Gunn, they actually did try to emulate King Shark's hammerhead look, but some things just look better on a comic book page than they do on camera. He explained on Twitter: "I did tests with the hammerhead design, which I love and originally thought I'd use. But having eyes on the sides far apart made it incredibly awkward shooting interactions with other people. You couldn't really see him looking at the other person and the shots tended to be too wide. But I was insistent on the dad-bod from the beginning as I didn't think King Shark would have such mammalian body structure." Director `~10693~` considered this film as the most fun he has had making a film, which he attributed to prioritizing creativity over perfectionism, being in the best place mentally and emotionally, having a "stupendous" cast and crew, a supportive studio (Warner Bros. didn't interfere with his vision and had only given a few minor notes on it), and feeling that he was at the height of his directing abilities. `~10693~`'s favourite shot in the film is when King Shark rips a man in half. King Shark was CGI while his victim was a dummy with prosthetics. `~16763~` described Peacemaker as a "douchebag Captain America." `~6063~` was initially hired to replace `~7375~` as Floyd Lawton/Deadshot, but it was later decided that Elba would play a new character (Bloodsport) to allow Smith to return in the future. `~10693~` based Weasel's portrayal in the film on comic artist `~Berkeley Breathed~`'s Bill the Cat from the comic strip @##"Bloom County,"##@ a character who is "barely more than an animal, he has no clue what is happening around him." `~16119~` said she would play Harley Quinn for as long as possible, as she loved playing her in the DC Extended Universe. Harley Quinn kills one of her captors and then uses her bare feet to snatch the keys from his body before proceeding to unlock the handcuffs above her head with her feet. `~16119~` did the stunt herself without using a stunt double. Director `~10693~` praised Robbie for executing the trick herself, confirming that she facilitated her own escape in the scene rather than having a stunt double step in. The director shared his disappointment over the fact that Robbie's costume covers her face during one of the pivotal moments in the trick, so it isn't obvious that she's responsible for it. Gunn states, "[Robbie] is like a human Swiss army knife, and watching this scene with her flipping backward was just beyond incredible." He goes on to express, "I was so happy that it worked and I was mesmerized by it and then I got into the editing room with the footage and [she] has a cuff on [her] outfit that covers her face so it looks like it's a stunt person. It's my biggest regret." Starro was the first ever villain in the Justice League comics. `~10693~` majorly used practical VFX in this film. He found it a relief after working on the CGI-heavy !~guardians_1~!~"Guardians of the Galaxy"~! films. `~10693~` wanted `~13641~` (who had appeared in his previous movies !~guardians_1~!~Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)~! and !~guardians_2~!~Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)~!) to play Peacemaker, but Bautista turned it down to play the lead role in `~12437~`'s @%Army of the Dead (2021)%@. Gunn had actually written Snyder's @%Dawn of the Dead (2004)%@ 17 years before, but despite the similar titles, 'Dawn' and 'Army of the Dead' are unrelated movies. Abner Krill is an "experiment gone wrong" in a suit covered with polka dots who `~10693~` described as "the dumbest DC character of all time" and hoped to turn into a tragic character for the film. Unbeknownst to Gunn, `~15301~` has vitiligo and felt a personal connection to the character for reasons including being bullied and called "polka dots" as a child. Many of the film's actors, including `~16119~` and `~6063~`, were drawn to the film once `~10693~` was attached to direct. `~16763~` accepted without even letting Gunn finish to explain what kind of project he was cast in. `~19816~`, meanwhile, agreed as soon as he learned that he was being asked to play a sadsack D-list villain with the civilian name Dick Hertz. @##Suicide Squad comic##@ writer `~19814~` plays Dr. Fitzgibbon in the film. To honor actor `~2348~` (TDK), his home city of Edmonton (located in Alberta, Canada) officially renamed their city hall to the `~2348~` Civilian Pavilion for the opening week of the Suicide Squad movie. Director `~10693~` has quietly protested the film's same-day release on HBO Max. While he has praised the service in regards to the Peacemaker series, Gunn was reportedly outraged to learn the film would be available to stream alongside its theatrical release and has refused to mention HBO Max when promoting the film, frequently asserting that it was made for theaters, specifically IMAX. `~16119~` shared what to expect from the upcoming return on the character: "One of the first things I said to James was, I think Harley is a catalyst of chaos. She's not necessarily your narrative center, and sometimes it's great when plot points can rest on other characters' shoulders, and she can be the thing that erupts a whole sequence of events. That's something I felt he agreed with, based on what I was reading in the script." She continued to tease her return as Harley with these words: "[In terms of] how she's changed, it's just always interesting to explore what characteristics different directors gravitate towards from the character. The common denominator is the source material, which is what I always built the character off anyway. Then she evolves in different ways under different people's direction." `~10693~` said in several interviews that he received much more creative freedom during filming than of !~guardians_1~!~the Guardians of the Galaxy movies~! from the MCU. Director `~10693~` gave King Shark a dad bod to make him look less like a mammal, as well as small eyes, a big mouth, and a small head to avoid the "cute anthropomorphic beast" design seen in popular characters like Baby Groot from Gunn's !~guardians_2~!~Guardians of the Galaxy films~! and ^~mandalorian_1_2~^~The Mandalorian (2019)~^'s Baby Yoda. Ironically, people still found King Shark surprisingly adorable. When `~10693~` was hired by DC Films, he was given permission to adapt any property he wanted. Apart from the Suicide Squad, Gunn had also considered a Superman film. However, he admitted that it wouldn't have been a sequel to !~super_steel~!~Man of Steel (2013)~!, the first film in the DC Extended Universe. `~Isabela Merced~` was considered for the role of Ratcatcher 2. `~2690~` was the rumored frontrunner to direct. Coincidentally, Gibson was one of the actors considered to play Bruce Wayne/Batman in `~1662~`'s !~bat~!~Batman (1989)~! and Two-Face in !~bat_forever~!~Batman Forever (1995)~!. SPOILER:In an interview with Variety, director `~10693~` revealed that his original pitch for the film included the death of Cleo Cazo/Ratcatcher II (`~19819~`) in the film's climax. However, he decided against it, feeling that "she's so sweet" that her death would've made the film too dark.:SPOILER SPOILER:After Captain Boomerang dies there's a shot of his arm holding up a boomerang, with it appearing to be glowing white from reflected light. In the comics, Boomerang was resurrected as a Black Lantern who then used spectral white boomerang constructs.:SPOILER SPOILER:As he dies, Javelin tells Harley Quinn she's 'the only one fit to carry his javelin.' Both he and Harley are former Olympic athletes (Javelin Toss & Gymnastics) turned criminals in the comics.:SPOILER SPOILER:Jotunheim' is also a place known from the Marvel Comics since 1963, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU): in !~thor~!~Thor (2011)~!, it is the planet inhabited by Frostgiants, and also Loki's planet of origin. Despite director `~10693~` having directed several movies in the MCU, it is not a reference to Marvel, as Jotunheim is a place mentioned in DC Comics since the late 1980s; Rick Flag actually died inside Jotunheim in @#'Baptism by Fire'#@, thanks to an explosion during `~19814~`'s original @##Suicide Squad comic##@ run.:SPOILER SPOILER:Director `~10693~` has suggested that Weasel may be innocent of the crimes attributed to him.:SPOILER SPOILER:T.D.K survives the film. Along with Peacemaker and Weasel, T.D.K's monitor shows that he did survive.:SPOILER SPOILER:Gunn said he chose the character Bloodsport, played by `~6063~`, because he liked the character in the comics. The character's comic book ability to manifest weapons is adapted in the film as different gadgets and transforming weaponry that come from his costume.:SPOILER SPOILER:`~10693~` stated that Superman survived after being shot with the Kryptonite bullet by Bloodsport after fans got worried.:SPOILER SPOILER:King Shark's immunity to bullets is demonstrated early on when Bloodsport's souped-up weaponry proves to be unable to do more than push him backwards. This comes into play during the climax, where he takes a nasty fall off of Jotenheim and is subsequently surrounded and fired on by a squad of commandos. As before, he proves to be not quite dead and rises to his feet to chow down on an unlucky soldier. If you look closely as he's being shot at, one can see that the bullets are merely bouncing off of him rather than penetrating.:SPOILER SPOILER:`~10693~` originally considered including Superman as the main "villain" in the film. However, he ultimately decided on Starro due to the ongoing uncertainty of whether Superman actor `~14105~` was still in the DC Extended Universe, in which Gunn's film shared continuity.:SPOILER
