Trivia:
Conviction -> `~13978~` was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy just before filming of the final season commenced. During the shooting, `~1140~` was careful to keep most of Alexis' shots on his right profile, as the left side of his face was fairly immobile at the time. Conviction -> For the first time since the show's inception, `~1140~` could now devote his attention exclusively to it. ^~p_buffy~^~Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)~^ and ^~firefly~^~Firefly (2002)~^ both ended their runs the previous year. Conviction -> `~7304~` who would later plays alongside `~19635~` on @##Bones (2005)##@ makes the first of several appearances on ^~p_angel~^~Angel (1999)~^ in this episode. Conviction -> Production designer `~Stuart Blatt~` says `~1140~` asked him to build the new Wolfram & Hart large enough so that he could "walk all around with a Steadicam and never have to cut" then did exactly that; the second scene after the credits is a single, four and one-half minute shot introducing all the main characters in their new setting. According to Whedon's DVD commentary, it took 27 takes to get this one long shot because "inevitably one actor is always going to have trouble with their lines, and it's usually going to be the one who's at the end of the take, because that's just my fate," Whedon says. Conviction -> This is the only season premiere not to feature Cordelia Chase. In 2021, `~17445~` revealed that `~1140~` "unceremoniously" fired her from the series after she gave birth, accusing her of "sabotaging" the show by getting pregnant and calling her "fat" to her colleagues. She said that came after years of constant "harassment" and "serialized abuses of power" that triggered a chronic physical condition from which I she still suffers. Conviction -> `~1140~` explains the decision to bring in `~810~` as Harmony-who has "worked for us for as long as I've worked on the show"-was because "she has been tirelessly funny, and engaging, and sexy, and delightful and it was very nice to bring her into the fold. She was long overdue to get into the mix, and we needed a blond, let's face it." Just Rewards -> Angel reflects on him being supposed to wear the amulet in Spike's place, as he was the one who received it from Wolfram & Hart in ^~angel_4~^~Angel: Home (2003)~^. Unleashed -> `~19866~` originally auditioned for the role of Eve. The part went to `~19862~`. However, the producers liked Mollen so much, she was brought back as Nina Ash, aka Werewolf Girl. Unleashed -> In this episode, werewolves are said to regain their human forms once dead. However, in ^~buffy_2~^~Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Phases (1998)~^, werewolf hunter Gib Cain claims to catch werewolves so he can sell their pelts. This is explained by introducing the idea of different species of werewolves with different characteristics, Nina's type considered very rare in North America. Unleashed -> Of his experience playing Dr. Evan Royce in this episode, `~3454~` said, "It was fine. It wasn't a particularly fleshed-out part. Everybody was very nice, and treated me well. I had nothing negative to say but it wasn't something that was particularly memorable." Hell-Bound -> Gunn says about the White Room, "Actually, it's not that bad... if you like cats." Angel nervously replies, "I'm kind of a dog person." It is part of TV lore that `~19635~` was walking his dog one day when he was spotted by a talent manager and cast as Angel in ^~p_buffy~^~Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)~^. Hell-Bound -> This is the only episode of either series ever to have a viewer discretion advised warning in it. Lineage -> Spike calling Wesley as "Percy" and referring to the Watcher's history as a "head boy" may be a reference to the ^~potter_3~^~Harry Potter~^ character Percy Weasley, who was also a head boy. Destiny -> Although credited, `~13978~` doesn't appear in this episode. This was due to his wedding to `~16925~` at the time of filming. This is the only episode after he made his first appearance in ^~angel_1~^~Angel: Parting Gifts (1999)~^ in which he does not appear. Destiny -> In the season retrospective, `~1140~` says the battle between Angel and Spike in this episode is the highlight of the final season. Destiny -> `~19654~`, excited to return to the series, says, "this is a particularly fun episode...There are so many different colors and dimensions. Even though [Spike and I] are the villains and we are evil, there always has been this very sweet love story between us". Destiny -> Four Deluxe action figures were produced based on this episode, two of Spike and two of Angel. Harm's Way -> The voice-over in the beginning says Wolfram & Hart has influence in every major corporation, including Weyland-Yutani. This fictitious firm is the ominous company in the ^~th_alien~^~Alien films~^, including !~p_avp~!~Alien vs. Predator (2004)~!. Soul Purpose -> This episode was `~19635~`'s directorial debut. Soul Purpose -> `~19635~` had just had knee surgery when shooting began. As a consequence Angel spends most of the episode sitting or lying down. Soul Purpose -> At 18:41 Fred pulls out an automobile license plate from Angel and says, "Came up the Gulf Stream, huh?" This is a direct reference to a line spoken by `~12531~` in !~jaws_1~!~Jaws (1975)~! when performing an autopsy on a shark. Soul Purpose -> Although Angel dreamed about Buffy, the actress who portrayed her is not `~10695~`. The dialogue was taken from ^~buffy_3~^~Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Prom (1999)~^. Soul Purpose -> It was rumoured that one of the strippers who was entertaining Spike was intended to be Kate Lockley but `~8810~` was too busy appearing in @##Law & Order (1990)##@ to make a cameo. Damage -> In the scene where Angel, Gunn, and Wesley are walking across the foyer at Wolfram and Hart, `~19635~` can be seen walking with a limp. This is probably due to the knee surgery that was kept him immobile in the previous episode. Damage -> Lorne says Vernon does readings for `~1597~`, who appeared opposite ^~buffy_2~^~Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Dark Age (1997)~^ and `~19832~` in @##Roseanne (1988)##@ and `~12220~` in !~true_lies~!~True Lies (1994)~!. You're Welcome -> `~17445~` turned down their initial offer to appear as Cordelia (she revealed years later that she didn't want to work with `~1140~` after years of constant harassment and verbal abuse, and firing her for getting pregnant the previous season). She said she later agreed to come back in order to give fans some closure to the character. You're Welcome -> According to `~17445~`, she and `~19635~` spent several hours crying together during their finale scene. You're Welcome -> Buffy Summers was originally intended to appear in the 100th episode, focusing on the rivalry between Angel and Spike and their feelings for Buffy, but `~10695~` was unable to commit due to a death in the family. Instead, `~17445~` was asked to return. Writer/director `~19661~` explains that since "we couldn't get Sarah", the episode was instead written for Cordelia Chase. He adds, "This turned out to be a Godsend because Charisma was fantastic." You're Welcome -> SPOILER:`~17445~` says the 100th episode was a momentous time to have Cordelia die, calling it "bittersweet...a love letter to Cordelia" and the story "one of the sweetest they'd ever told."`~19661~` agrees: "It's a beautiful farewell to Charisma for the series" and it gives "Charisma a send off that was respectful to her and Cordelia Chase. I was very proud to have my name on it.":SPOILER Why We Fight -> Sam Lawson was the only vampire Angel sired after he was ensouled. However, as pointed out in the episode, he only did so in order to save the submarine. Also, according to Sam, he was unlike the average vampire, as even though he still lacked a human soul, he did not enjoy the pain and death he inflicted, like normal, non-ensouled vampires usually do. Smile Time -> `~19653~` confessed that "the puppeteers were so good that it was easy to believe that Angel was actually trying to kick my butt. I blew takes by laughing too much, actually." A Hole in the World -> The scene where Gunn is fighting himself in the White Room was done by filming `~19839~` twice in two shots, as he switched between good and evil Gunn. Richards says of the experience "It was one of the most fun things I've ever done on the show." A Hole in the World -> SPOILER:`~1140~` admits he became emotional during the scene in which Fred dies: "I cried man tears when I wrote it, and when I filmed it and when I edited it...it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever filmed." `~19841~` agrees, saying "We kept crying while we were just reading the script; saying, 'We're not going to have any tears left!' Of course that didn't really hold true..." The final death scene was challenging for `~13978~` as well, who says "There's a sort of tightening that happens with each scene where you feel it just getting worse and worse and I remember when we were shooting it that that was what kept choking me up. The situation of losing Fred was becoming more and more real and closer.":SPOILER Underneath -> It was during the filming of the basement fight scene that showrunners informed the crew that the series had been officially cancelled. Underneath -> `~1174~` (appearing here after having starred in the short-run Whedon series ^~firefly~^~Firefly (2002)~^) later appeared with `~19635~` in the TV show @##Bones (2005)##@. He plays an old friend of Booth's (Boreanaz). Time Bomb -> `~19868~` who plays Amanda is married to `~19635~`. Of the experience, Boreanaz says, "[it was] great to have her come on to the show, and have our son look at that, and see the two of us actually play opposite one another for a brief moment." He adds, "We had fun with it. It was nothing too serious, it was just a small little role, a laugh." Power Play -> Last appearance of `~19866~`'s character Nina Ash. Had there been a season six, Oz would have returned to help her with her condition. Not Fade Away -> `~13603~` (Lindsey) was unavailable for filming at the same time as the rest of the cast, so he filmed his scenes one and a half months before the rest of the episode was shot. Not Fade Away -> The girl that Gunn helps move, was first seen in ^~buffy_2~^~Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Lie to Me (1997)~^, as a vampire worshipper named Chantarelle. In ^~buffy_3~^~Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Anne (1998)~^, she reunites with Buffy as a runaway. Buffy gives her the name Anne to use as a thank you for helping her. Anne is Buffy's middle name that she was also using as her alias as a waitress. Not Fade Away -> `~1140~` says of this episode, "This was not the final grace note after a symphony, the way the Buffy finale was. We are definitely still in the thick of it. But the point of the show is that you're never done; no matter who goes down, the fight goes on. Did I end it this way so that it could lead into an exciting sixth season? Yes, but this is still a final statement, if that's what it needs to be." Not Fade Away -> `~19661~` felt that this was "the perfect way to end the series, and anybody who says otherwise is dumb." The central theme of Angel, Fury explains, is that "the fight never ends...You can't ever win but the fight is worth fighting. Any proper resolution of, 'Oh, we've defeated the demons, they've gone back to hell, let's get a beer,' just would have been absolutely wrong for that show." Part of Angel's story, Fury says, is that "everybody that he's ever been close to dies...he will always outlive the people he cares about."[4] Not Fade Away -> `~10695~` expressed interest in returning for this episode, but `~13603~` didn't want the finale to focus on a guest star at the expense of the regulars. He told TV Guide, "I want to end the show with the people who've been in the trenches together, the characters who have lived - and occasionally died - together." `~19847~` elaborates, saying Gellar was intended to appear in ^~angel_5~^~Angel: Power Play (2004)~^ but couldn't make it due to other commitments. By the time the producers learned she was available for the finale, Bell says, "to force her into the very last episode to reread stuff that we already dealt with didn't make any sense." Not Fade Away -> Highest rated episode of the entire series. Not Fade Away -> SPOILER:`~13978~` was asked what he would like them to do with Wesley, so he suggested he be killed off. He says that he "couldn't think of anything more fitting...the perfect human death of a human life.:SPOILER Not Fade Away -> SPOILER:`~13603~` jokingly discussed the final battle in SFX Magazine: "Gunn is dead. Illyria keeps fighting. Angel loses an arm. Spike gets Shanshu. And Xander loses another eye, which is funny, because he isn't even there".:SPOILER Not Fade Away -> SPOILER:Lindsey is killed by Lorne as a favor to Angel. He is the only known being killed by Lorne in the series.:SPOILER
