Synopsis: A man living in a futuristic sterile colony begins to question his circumscribed existence when his friend is chosen to go to the Island, the last uncontaminated place on earth.

Reaction: The idea behind the story is not as original as it wants to think it is, but the action is energetic and there's a nice feeling at the end which helps. A bit of a mess, but not terrible.

Personal Rating: 7/10

Random Trivia For This Title:

  • Steven Spielberg said McGregor "looked like a young Harrison Ford when he saw the dailies."
  • Considered to be a remake of Logan's Run (1976).
  • Michael Bay came close to dying during the shoot the shot where Lincoln grabs the chain when a pipe he didn't know was there flew past his head at 45 miles per hour. One of his cameramen had told him to move back a foot just moments before, and if he hadn't the pipe would have struck his skull. The pole took out a $600k camera right afterward.
  • The futuristic red Lexus concept car that Tom Cruise drove in Minority Report can be seen parked on the street when Lincoln and Jordan ask a man for an information directory. Other modified versions of the same car are seen driving through the streets moments later.
  • Some shots during the train wheel chase were re-used in Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011), also directed by Michael Bay.
  • Johansson wouldn't come out of her trailer when it came time to shoot the sex scene, and Bay assumed it was the "typical woman not coming out of the trailer" thing. He went to her trailer but she surprised him by saying the issue was the wardrobe. "I'm not wearing this F^@&ing ghetto-ass F^@&ing bra! I'm going naked!" He had to explain to her that wasn't an option as the film was set to be PG-13.
  • Tom Lincoln is from Scotland, and has a liking for custom sport bikes - these character traits are based on those of Ewan McGregor.
  • [?] Robert S. Fiveson, director of The Clonus Horror (1979), brought a copyright infringement suit against DreamWorks and Warner Brothers. The lawsuit cited almost one hundred points of similarity between "Clonus" and this film, and the court ruled that Fiveson made a prima facie case for infringement. Before the case could go to trial, DreamWorks settled with the plaintiffs for an undisclosed seven-figure amount.
  • (at around one hour and thirteen minutes) The black and white commercial featuring Sarah Jordan wasn't shot specifically for the movie; it is an actual commercial starring Scarlett Johansson.
  • Michael Bay drove behind a flatbed truck carrying train wheels on the highway leaving Palmdale, and, noticing how dangerous it looked, was inspired to create a destructive chase scene involving one.
  • Michael Bay recalled the scene where Lincoln Six Echo and Tom Lincoln fight, as long and tedious to shoot, since it took half an hour to change Ewan McGregor's clothes between each shot so he could play both characters.
