Random Trivia For This Title:

  • David Morse was considered for the lead role.
  • Daryl Hannah is a vegetarian, and so refused to eat real lobster for the restaurant scene. The crew scooped out the insides of real, cooked lobsters and made up a thick, tofu-like paste to fill the shells - this is what Hannah ate when she chewed into the lobsters. Director Ron Howard said in an interview for [Biography] that she cried after each take over the deaths of the lobsters for their shells.
  • Before Tom Hanks accepted the role of Allen Bauer, it had already been turned down by John Travolta, Bill Murray and Dudley Moore.
  • At the time of filming Daryl Hannah was extremely shy about her body. Director Ron Howard has mentioned that she wore both band-aids and makeup over her nipples to conceal them.
  • This was the first film to be released under the Walt Disney Productions's new Touchstone Films label, which was created in order to allow the studio to release more adult-oriented fare.
  • When Madison is at Bloomingdales at the Electrical department - she passes one of the televisions which is playing Disney's The Black Hole.
  • Credited with introducing the girl's name Madison, which has since become one of the most popular names for newborn girls in the early 21st century.
  • The Scene at the Racquetball court where John Candy serves and the ball hits him in the head was done in one take. The crew expected to be there all day to do that shot so when he did it on one take, the whole crew clapped.
  • Before Daryl Hannah accepted the role of Madison, it had already been turned down by Michelle Pfeiffer, [?] Melanie Griffith and Kathleen Turner. [?] Tatum O'Neal had also been offered the role of Madison but declined as did Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Diane Lane. Jodie Foster auditioned for the role, but turned it down in order to play a character in The Hotel New Hampshire. [?] Rosanna Arquette auditioned for the role of Madison, but had to back out. Brooke Shields reportedly turned down an offer to play Madison, in order to study French Literature at the Princeton University. [?] Debra Winger also reportedly wanted the role of Madison, but Ron Howard turned her down.
