Synopsis: Michael Jennings makes a living reverse-engineering the life's work of other people. Now he has to reverse-engineer his own life.

Reaction: This is a fun concept movie that, yes, could have been more profound. But as it is, it's fun to see how they work the various items into Jennings' master plan in unpredictable ways.

Personal Rating: 8/10

Random Trivia For This Title:

  • The 20 items that Jennings sent to himself are: sunglasses, pack of cigarettes, bus pass, diamond ring, paperclip, fortune from a cookie, janitor's key, lighter, hairspray, matchbook, Allcom pass, BMW key, looking glass, stamp, ball bearings, allen wrench, half dollar, cross word puzzle, bullet, and a watch.
  • In the original story ({Paycheck} by Philip K. Dick) Jennings sends to himself very different items and there were only 7 of them. They were: "A code key. A ticket stub. A parcel receipt. A length of fine wire. Half a poker chip, broken across. A green strip of cloth. A bus token."
  • Director Trademark: [John Woo] [doves]
  • Thought up as a joke by a visual effects engineer (so says the "making of" included on DVD), some scenes make hints that the machine may be a sophisticated hand-lines reader. Before Michael goes to Allcom for his job, he's getting inspiration from a ceramic hand sculpture, showing the lines. When, at the end of the film, he uses the machine, there is a close shot of interaction between the machine and his hand-lines.
  • Director Trademark: [John Woo] [Mexican Stand-off] Twice between Jennings and Wolfe and Jennings and Rethrick.
  • This movie is based on the short story by Philip K. Dick.
  • Ben Affleck's character was supposed to be a New York Mets fan (or Yankees - sources differ), but Affleck, a Boston Red Sox fan, persuaded director John Woo to change the team to the Red Sox.
  • Matt Damon was originally considered for the part of Michael Jennings, but turned it down because it was too similar to The Bourne Identity.
