Synopsis: Orbiting a planet on the brink of war, scientists test a device to solve an energy crisis, and end up face-to-face with a dark alternate reality.

Reaction: A bit of a mess at times, full of pseudo-science and plot holes. But it's not completely bad. It mostly fails to hold up to what you may have expected from the first two Cloverfield movies.

Personal Rating: 6/10

Random Trivia For This Title:

  • Donal Logue's character in this and John Goodman's in 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) share the last name "Stambler". Both have crackpot theories that turn out to be partly true.
  • The Cloverfield monster seen at the very end of the film is not the same monster from the original Cloverfield (2008), as the original monster is estimated to be 180 feet tall with a leaner, more spider-like body. This new one stands taller than the clouds over the ocean, and one can assume that a large portion of its body is underwater. Fans have speculated that this new monster is probably a similar subspecies, or even the same type of creature from the original film at a different stage in its evolutionary timeline. It is notable that the creature from the original film was intended to be a baby, meaning that this creature could be a fully grown member of the species.
  • John Krasinski was in talks to join the cast, but dropped out to lead [Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan (2018)].
  • Originally titled God Particle, new scenes (specifically with Roger Davies' character) were later filmed to tie the movie into the [Cloverfield universe].
  • Although this movie takes place in 2028, and the prior films in the [Cloverfield franchise] took place much earlier, producer J.J. Abrams said in an interview that he has a plan on how all the Cloverfield movies (and future ones) will be tied together.
  • The newscaster interviewing Mark Stambler (Donal Logue) is played by Suzanne Cryer, who also appeared in 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) as the woman who begs to be let into Howard (John Goodman)'s bunker.
  • The gas station at the start of the movie and several items of equipment on the ship are branded Kelvin, which is a J.J. Abrams tradition. Abrams produced all three of the films that are a part of the [Cloverfield universe], including this one. Kelvin is also the name of a starship in J.J. Abrams version of "Star Trek" in 2009.
