Synopsis: A kind-hearted street urchin and a power-hungry Grand Vizier vie for a magic lamp that has the power to make their deepest wishes come true.

Reaction: The remake was unnecessary, but they did a good job making it unique compared to the first one. And Will Smith's Genie is not the instant classic of Robin Williams', but he did bring a fun swagger energy to the role that made it his own.

Random Trivia For This Title:

  • In the "Friend Like Me" number, the Carpet does the Carlton dance from Will Smith's comedy [The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990)].
  • Frank Welker reprises his roles as Abu and the Cave of Wonders from the original Aladdin (1992), making him the first cast member from a Disney animated feature to play the same character(s) in the live-action remake. James Earl Jones would later follow suit in The Lion King (2019).
  • Sir Patrick Stewart campaigned for the role of Jafar. He had previously turned down the role in Aladdin (1992) and has regretted it ever since.
  • During the scene when Aladdin asks Genie to "make him a prince", Genie produces an actual prince in the background. The prince is dressed in colors of pink & lime green, the same colors in the title logo & a nod to Will Smith's comedy [The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990)]. So, the Genie created the Fresh Prince for Aladdin.
  • Will Smith said that he was "terrified" while playing the character, but that "[he] found a lane that pays homage" to Robin Williams' performance in the original Aladdin (1992), while still making the role "[his] own thing".
  • Will Smith recorded "Friend Like Me" on the first day he met with the composers.
  • The "Prince Ali" song has the lyric "Sunday Salaam" changed to "Friday Salaam". This is actually accurate, as the holy day for Muslims is Friday not Sunday.
  • Guy Ritchie chose Will Smith to be Genie because he believed Smith could give a performance as good as the late Robin Williams, but not similar: "Just the flavor of the character would be different enough and unique enough that it would be in a different lane, versus trying to compete."
  • Guy Ritchie was primarily interested in doing the film because it was the Disney story he was closest to: "My stories are really about street hustlers. That's what I know how to do. And Aladdin is a classic street hustler who makes good." He also decided to do a children's film for his five children.
  • Jim Carrey was the original choice for the Genie but at the time he was involved in a much publicized lawsuit so couldn't commit to any long term work.
  • There were rumors that Gilbert Gottfried would be reprising his role as Iago from the original franchise. However, it was later confirmed that Alan Tudyk would be taking up the role, to the disappointment of many fans.
  • Will Smith's first Disney Movie.
  • [?] Dev Patel, [?] Avan Jogia and Riz Ahmed were considered to play Aladdin.
  • [?] Gabriel Iglesias was in the running to play the Genie.
  • Tom Hardy was rumored for the role of Jafar, but this caused another outcry in an ongoing debate among viewers about Hollywood's perceived whitewashing practices (which had peaked with the casting of Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in the Shell (2017)). Hardy was reportedly director Guy Ritchie's preferred choice for the role, but later stated that there was not truth to the rumors that he would play the role. Marwan Kenzari was later cast as Jafar.
  • Pro wrestler/WWE Superstar [?] Mustafa Ali Adeel Alam campaigned to play Aladdin.
  • [?] Jade Thirlwall and [?] Tara Sutaria were considered for the role of Jasmine.
  • Dutch actor [?] Achraf Koutet and American actor [?] George Kosturos had tested for the role of Aladdin before Canadian actor Mena Massoud was cast.
  • [?] Priyom Haider was a strong consideration for Aladdin because of his look and physique to be ideal and has played the character in different Aladdin projects.
  • [?] Rayane Bensetti auditioned for the role of Aladdin.
